joint liability

A situation in which liability is shared by more than one person, such as the liability of general partners for a contractual obligation of the partnership. It differs from joint and several liability only in that in joint liability, any party named in the lawsuit may insist that the other parties (such as general partners) be part of the legal action before it can proceed.
