While remotely monitoring elevators and escalators is not new, leveraging the internet of things (IoT), cloud technology, big data analytics, and machine learning will take the capabilities to another level. With the introduction of cloud computing and big data analytics, the data can now be more easily be aggregated and analyzed. Beyond predictive maintenance capabilities, IoT will provide building owners and property managers access to data that they have never had before. Available information such as wait times, usage by floor by the time of day, and exact availability calculations will enhance building operations insights and will usher in new ways to measure, manage and contract vertical transportation services. The wealth of data from the elevator will be used to allow seamless and intuitive movement by building occupants that will usher in more personalized services to both passengers and those managing the property.
