A system of sustainability indicators that measures progress toward sustainability.
UK sustainability indicators
In 1994 the government published its Strategy for Sustainable Development, following the commitment made at the Earth Summit of June 1992 in Rio. These were revised in 1995 and 2005. One of the commitments in that document was the development of a set of indicators to help to inform people, including those in government, industry, non-governmental organisations, and the general public, about the issues involved in considering whether our development is becoming more sustainable.
